How to use your coffee maker correctly

Coffee and coffee makers are a routine part of many people’s lives. Everyone wants their coffee fix in the morning and enjoy a good cup. For those who are not familiar with a coffee machine and have just invested in one, the brewing process can be intimidating. But like any other piece of equipment, following these simple steps will help users to get a great cup, of their favorite blend.

The basics of making coffee

1. A coffee maker consists of two major moving parts – the coffee basket and a carafe. Check the type of maker you have and buy the right filter for your basket. Use a natural or bleached one made of paper. Some of the best yet cheap coffee maker has filters built in and this is more environmentally friendly. This cuts down on costs.

2. Measure out the amount of grounds you need. This will depend on how many cups you want to make and how strong you want the brew. The standard ratio is 2 tbsps. For 6 ounces of liquid coffee. If in doubt, check the coffee maker manual for ideas. Use the scoop provided by the manufacturer.

3. Measure the water and pour it into the tank of the coffee maker. Coffee pots usually have measuring lines on the side – use those as this will give you an accurate idea of how many cups you will get. After pouring water into the tank, put the pot back on the warmer.

4. After plugging in the coffee maker, turn it on. Check if your maker has an automatic or manual setting.

5. Wait for the water tank to empty out and the coffee is brewed to start pouring. If your equipment has a pause button, use that to stop the process before pouring yourself a cup.

6. Empty out the filter after every brewing cycle to get the best possible cup. Rinse the filter so that there is no residue. Reusing old grounds or remnants can alter the taste in the next brewing cycle.
